The Emancipation at the Stakes -The Preakness 2010 Story
It was not just another day at the Pimlico Race Course. It’s the 135th Preakness Stakes! But the Preakness 2010 wasn’t about to end without some overwhelming surprises. And the winner? Lookin at Lucky who was, weeks ago at the Kentucky Derby, did not do pretty well.
Now, I am not about horses and racing but, I tell you, this is about redemption. The will to overcome against the odds and today’s life’s teacher is Lookin At Lucky.
This three-year old horse had some bad luck at the horseracing arena from Breeders Cup Juvenile and then to finishing an upsetting 6th place at the Kentucky Derby recently. But as I said, the Lookin At Luck and Preakness 2010 is a story about redemption.
Trainer Bob Baffert who last won the Preakness in 2002, never imagined Lookin At Lucky would win the Preakness 2010, but that doesn’t disheartened him. He prepared and trained Lucky for Preakness 2010 after their loss at the Kentucky Derby. Bob even changed its regular jock Garrett Gomez to Martin Garcia. Now that is an additional feel-good story as, Martin, 25, got his license only 5 years ago and this ride was going to be his first win in a Triple Crown race!
The change from the regular jock to Martin did not upset Lookin At Lucky at all. At the Preakness 2010 after the race press conference, Mike Pegram, one of Lookin At Lucky’s owners, said that “Martin rode him (Lookin at Lucky) beautifully.” The horse’s owners Pegram, and two others Paul Weitmann and Karl Watson said that they did not only invest money on Lookin at Lucky but also their emotions and passion as they wait for their “baby” to be ready. “It’s all about the horse,” they said during an interview.
Martin, Bob, and Lookin at Lucky were meant to win the Preakness 2010. They were there in Maryland at the Preakness to set the stage for their deliverance and to eventually be hailed as Preakness winners. A beaten horse, with a beaten jock, and a trainer thirsty for another victory all came riding up to the finish line with a $1,000,000 Preakness Stakes.
