2010 NFL Draft’s Pick “Mr. Irrelevant”

The Detroit Lions selected Weber State wide receiver Tim Toone with the 255th selection in the 2010 NFL Draft. It was three days after Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh held up a No. 1 Lions jersey as the second overall pick in the draft, Toone also held up another Lions jersey on stage at Radio City Music Hall in New York. But this jersey used duct tape to cover the No. 1 in the shape of letter “I”. Tim Toone was the latest player dubbed as “Mr. Irrelevant”, the name given annually to the draft’s final pick.

The announcement was made by the founder of Irrelevant Week, Paul Salata, which is an annual five – day bash in Newport Beach, California for the last man drafted. Since 1976, the last player in the draft is honored by a group in southern California, flying him out as part of an “Irrelevant Week” celebration and charity fundraiser. It was the second time in four years and the fifth time in franchise history that the Lions had the honor of making the last selection in the NFL draft picks.
It was also Weber State’s second time in school history to be the Alma Mater of the NFL Draft’s Mr. Irrelevant. Timothy Lee Toone, a 5 – foot – 10, 185 – pound receiver, was born on February 14. 1985. He arrived on the Weber State in 2006 after serving a two – year Mormon mission in West Africa before finishing college. He became a standout receiver his last two seasons and had 83 receptions for 1,109 yards and 10 touchdowns during his senior season while helping the Wildcats to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

In 2008, he had 84 catches for 1,525 yards and seven scores. But just because Toone is Mr. Irrelevant doesn’t mean he will be irrelevant, as the Lions made Ramzee Robinson from Alabama the last pick in 2007. Ramzee, the 255th overall in 2007 played 19 games and has gone on to play for the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns.
