U.S. Masters: Money… Money… Money!!!

Before the start of the U.S. Masters 2010 tournament at Augusta National, the name everyone was talking about had been Tiger Woods and his return to the game of golf after a five month absence amid stories of sexual scandals rocking his marriage. But by the end of the weekend, the crowds in Georgia were talking about Phil Mickelson and his emotional win in this coveted event.
Mickelson kept his emotions in check to take the trophy, as his wife Amy made an appearance for the first time in nearly a year since her diagnosis with breast cancer. Despite being bed-ridden all week, she attended the sporting event anyway to support her husband Phil, and it apparently made an impact. To everyone in attendance, it appeared that the entire weekend meant that much more to the golfer, who was seen crying during the moving tribute to his family, including his mother, who is also battling breast cancer.
Meanwhile, it should be noted that although there was only one winner in the tourney, most of the golfers that participated in the prestigious event did not go home empty-handed. According to several news sources, the first place winner was awarded $1,350,000 while the second place amount, given to Lee Westwood, was an impressive $810,000. Third place was over half a million dollars at $510,000. All golfers in the top 19 positions are figured to collect an amount of six figures, which should entice the people watching on television to think about taking up the sport of golf. The total prize money for this year’s Masters totaled $7.5 million, which is the same amount as last year’s tournament. For example, this year’s 5th place finisher, Tiger Woods, collected a very healthy sum of $330,000. Next year, there may be a slight increase in payouts, to adjust for inflation.
